The End of a Successful Year...

Main Content Inline Small

Welcome to the final Wear to Care of 2011. As many of you will know, 2011 has been SATCoL’s 20th anniversary year and as it draws to a close we’d like to thank all our colleagues and partners for their support over the past 12 months. Despite operating in a tough economic climate, our collection amounts have remained at a high level and we believe we have made great strides forward in tackling some of the issues facing the textile recycling industry including minimising theft from banks and door-to-door bags and cracking down on bogus collectors.

We were delighted to contribute to the Toolkit produced by the Trading Standards Institute and the Fundraising Standards Board, which is designed to give police authorities the tools to successfully apprehend those responsible. You can read more about this below. The new SmartWater technology we reported on in our previous newsletter is also proving highly successful and we are pleased to be making significant headway in cracking down on this criminal activity.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter.

RWM Exhibition a Major Hit

Main Content Inline Small

We’ve been exhibiting at RWM in partnership with CIWM for a number of years now and always consider it a highlight of the business calendar. However this year was extra special for us as we are celebrating our 20th year and we had a brand new stand at which to meet people.

As well as enjoying some celebratory birthday cake, visitors to our new stand had the chance to find out more about SATCoL’s free clothing collection service and chat to the team about the latest developments to the scheme.

Along with debuting our fresh new exhibition stand, for the second year running we co-sponsored the fashion show, which was designed to raise awareness of eco-friendly fashion and responsible shopping habits. The daily shows highlighted the creative reuse and recycling of textiles from a selection of designers who work with recycled textiles. Emmeline Child, our chosen designer for the show added a touch of glamour and excitement to this year’s catwalk with her ‘Vintage Pretty’ theme.

It’s important that we continue to raise the profile of textile recycling at events like RWM and we’re already looking forward to returning in 2012.

Scarborough Road Show Success

Main Content Inline Small

We recently celebrated the arrival of our brand new exhibition unit at a special textile recycling road show in Scarborough.

Working with Scarborough Council’s Recycling Education Officer, we visited areas across Scarborough to speak to residents about the importance of textile recycling, and take any textile or clothing donations.

We were thrilled with the turnout – in fact nearly 100kgs of clothing were donated – and the event provided us with an excellent opportunity to speak to members of the public about our work and how it supports The Salvation Army.

The new unit is available for road shows and other local events throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, whether it’s in a supermarket car park, at a local fair or as part of a recycling or environmental event.

We are always pleased to meet our local authority and corporate colleagues, as well as members of the public. Please contact Paul Ozanne on 0788 772 6410 or email paul.ozanne@satradingco.org for more information on how we can help support your recycling events or even host a road show or dedicated presentation in your area.

SATCoL Welcomes WRAP to Wellingborough

Main Content Inline Small

As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations we were very pleased to welcome two special guests from WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) to our head office last month.

Chief Executive Officer, Dr Liz Goodwin and Director of Closed Loop Economy, Dr Marcus Gover were welcomed to Wellingborough by SATCoL’s Managing Director Trevor Caffull where they heard about our anniversary celebrations and met senior management and staff. We then gave them a private tour of the Kettering transfer station where they gained a valuable insight into SATCoL’s work in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Following the tour we hosted Dr Goodwin and Dr Gover at our head office for a chat about our plans for the future. The discussions provided us with an excellent opportunity to talk in some detail about the issues currently facing the textile recycling industry and how we can continue to work together with WRAP to increase clothing collection rates and reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfill.

The visit was a great success and a fitting way to round off our anniversary celebrations.

Toolkit To Tackle Collection Crime

Main Content Inline Small

As a leading UK clothing collection company SATCoL is committed to helping tackle the criminal activity surrounding our industry, whether it’s bogus collectors posing as charities, or theft from clothing banks or door-to-door bags. As part of our initiatives in this area we were pleased to be able to contribute to a new toolkit produced by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) to help Trading Standards professionals tackle charity bag crime.

The online toolkit is designed to provide guidance to police and trading standards officers on how to deal with fraud and theft. It will clarify the laws surrounding these issues and give clear advice on how to best apprehend and prosecute those involved.

As a contributor to the toolkit, SATCoL was pleased to be able to attend the launch event at the Charity Clothes Collection Symposium, organised by the Fundraising Standards Board in September. The event was also attended by Minister for Civil Society, Nick Hurd, who welcomed the toolkit.

For more information on the Toolkit you can speak to Paul Ozanne or visit http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/extra/news-item.cfm/newsid/731

Spotlight on Paul Ozanne, national recycling co-ordinator

Wear to Care chats to Paul Ozanne about what it takes to be national recycling co-ordinator...

As the recycling co-ordinator at SATCoL, no two days are the same. It is my job to do everything possible to provide practical solutions to meet local authority recycling targets and help members of the public understand the benefits of textile recycling.

We have a wealth of information in our recycling department and we're responsible for many different things. My job responsibilities vary day-to-day, from visiting local authorities all over the country, attending government agency meetings and preparing for management meetings, to hosting corporate executives and other visitors at our head offices. It’s the variety and challenges this job brings that I really enjoy.

Another big part of my job is organising recycling road shows and exhibitions across the UK and Republic of Ireland. The recycling department travels all over the country to speak to residents about our work and take clothing donations.

Maintaining external relations is crucial and I am in daily contact with our dedicated press office, Absolute PR & Marketing, regarding media enquiries, press releases and ongoing campaigns. I also oversee enquiries from Salvationists and the general public relating to clothing banks and door-to-door collections.

It is a busy and varied job that involves a lot of travelling and long hours, but helping to achieve success with our Clothing Collection Scheme makes it all worthwhile!
